Tips for aspiring authors:
Now, I'm not pretending to be an expert, but having two books under my belt has given me a little perspective on the writing process. A friend of a friend contacted me for a little advice, as he wanted to start writing a novel on his own. I figured I would share it with whomever is kind enough to follow this blog.
1) Write every day
- Seriously. Even if it is complete sh*t, MAKE yourself sit down for at least an hour a day just to get into the habit. If you don't, you might become one of those people who write 5 chapters and then never come back to it
2) Plan your characters
- I made the mistake of not doing this, and I had to go back and rewrite a TON just to get their personalities right. Make a spreadsheet for each character you create at the time of their inception. What was their past like? What habits do they have? How do they handle stress? What was their childhood nickname and did they like it? The more you do the better. I didn't learn this until after the completion of my second book (my awesome editor taught me) and after using this technique for edits it made my second book WAY WAY better than it would have. VERY important
3) Don't be showy
- Trying to impress the reader with your lexicon (See what I did there) does the exact opposite. Use the word that fits, not the flashy word
4)Fix grammar on second pass
-just keep moving and get the story down.
5) She mentioned that you doing a different genre then what I write, so the best piece of advice I can give is to read that genre until your eyeballs bleed. You learn the most by writing but second most by reading.
Ok, thats good to start with. And read Steven King's book called "On writing." Even if you hate his work, there's a lot of good stuff in there.
